This is my confession..

Well, I'm not afraid to tell you that I am afraid of writing this post because I fear the reactions that may come from this post and that it will change how you see (or read) me. Disclaimer: This has nothing at all to do with anyone that I'm friends with or who's blog I read. It is in no way written to offend or hurt any of your feelings. It's just me, telling you how I feel.

*clears throat* Well, this is my confession. I don't like dogs.

Yes, I know, some of you who just read that probably hate me now, but it's true. Well, it's mostly true. Let me back up and explain.

It's not that I don't like dogs period, I just have many certain things that I don't like about them. I actually had several dogs and cats when I was growing up, so it's not like I'm a dog hater, I just don't want one right now, or at all in the forseeable future.

This does cause a small problem though seeing how my husband LOVES dogs and BEGS me for one every day. However, I have put my foot down about the issue, and very strongly in fact! :) Even though Bryan wants one, I do not for the reasons listed below:

  • they stink
  • they shed
  • they cost too much
  • they make too much noise
  • you can't control them
  • they have minds of their own
  • they're too much responsibility
  • they slobber
  • they jump on you when you don't want them to
  • they pee and poop all over the place
  • they destroy everything

Now, you're probably saying "My dog doesn't do that" or "My dog never did that!" or "Yeah, so what? Children do the same thing too!" Blah, blah, blah. Yes, I know, but at least it would be my child, something that I literally bore from my own body, part of my flesh and blood, my child. People are always telling me that I should get a dog, but I can honestly say that I would prefer to get pregnant and have a child before I would ever get a dog.

I just can't stand that they drool all over you and shed and stink and jump and scratch you and get you muddy and dirty! I just think it's gross. Sorry, that's just how I feel. Hate me if you must!

However, I will admit that while some dogs are butt ugly, there are some dogs that I think are SO CUTE! Yep, cutie patooties for sure, especially when they're puppies. I think that's another part of the problem, I absolutely love and gush over puppies, but that's the problem. They don't stay puppies! I do know that they are great with kids and old people and I know that it's good for them to have a compainion. I just can't stand the thought of some dog peeing/pooping all over my house and ruining everything. NO THANK YOU! I also enjoy getting a full night's sleep without any interruptions!

I know you say, "But they're man's best friend!" Yes, that might be true for some of you, but for myself, I prefer to have a best friend that's...well, human.

You might also say, "They're great for protecting the family and watching out for you!" Yes, that might also be true, but I also believe that's what Jesus, my husband, and the pink baseball bat that sits beside my bed are for! ;)

Now, I am trying to prepare myself for down the road. I'm sure we'll end up getting a dog when the kids are older and we need to teach them all about responsibility. Hehe..However, we will never have animals that stay inside our house, I'm putting my foot down on that one. If we get a dog, it WILL be an outside dog. But, not for many, many years!

Now, to all my friends who have dogs and your dogs are part of your life and are your family, and are your children, I still love you and am so happy that you have your dogs and that they make you so happy! That's all that matters. Also, please don't assume that "Well, Chelsey doesn't like dogs, we can't be friends anymore" or "Well, she doesn't like dogs so I can never ask her over to my house." No, no, no. I only ask that you don't let your dog lick me, jump on me, slobber on me, or shed on me. Hehe..

I love you and hopefully, you'll still love me. Even after reading my confession!

You're not alone - I stand with you!

We left our dogs with our parents when we moved here because we didn't know what our housing situation would be like, and our life is so much simpler!

We had Mavis before Cate was born, and she was like our little baby...then we had a real baby, and her status fell quite a bit. We got Maude to let Mavis have a playmate and our life seemed to go out control. Too much noise and mess. We'll be dog free for many, many years as far as I'm concerned. I have too much on my plate to worry about taking care of an animal properly.

I do like dogs, I just like when they belog to other people. (Perhaps that how a lot of people feel about children?) I don't want one in our house. It took being dog free for several months to realize this, but I'm sure of it now. I realize we may have to take our dogs back when we move back the US, but I'm really hoping the "grandparents" are willing to keep them. Yes, we miss having them (I'm not completely heartless) but I'd rather just be able to visit them.

Girl, you just haven't had a trained dog! They're
only that way if they're not trained! Dogs drive people crazy
but only the human is to blame. One must invest ample and quality time into training and grooming a pet. Most people don't and then wonder why the pet only adds chaos instead of enhancing their lives. Only get a dog if you're willing to spend a good 6-8 months in heavy training. If not, get a house plant :)

Oh, and please no "outside dogs only." there's no point in treating an animal that way.

No worries, I still heart you. I'm just assuming that you haven't had a properly trained dog in the past. Come on over to my house - Texas won't jump on you OR slobber! ;)

Sorry for the above -- typos! Ugh! : )

I am in ABSOLUTE agreeance with Cass. We still love you and respect your opinion, but it's pretty clear you haven't experienced the joys of a trained dog!

The dog's behavior isn't the dog's fault, it's the owners fault!!! If the owner takes the time to train the dog from day one, the problems you described won't be there. Max doesn't tear things up, pee or poop in the house EVER, he doesn't stink because he gets a weekly bath that he loves to receive, he doesn't jump on people, etc. He's soooo low maintenance. I'm not defending my dog, because I know you weren't attacking him or anything... I'm just giving my own personal experience. Friends of mine have a big golden retriever, and he wouldn't do any of those things you described either. Dogs are VERY smart and can be trained if their owners take the time to do it. A dog's behavior is always a direct sign of his training.

I also agree with Cass about the "outside only" thing. It's mean. Probably just better not to get one.

We still love you!

I have to say that though a trained dog is certainly a different story than an untrained dog, I still wouldn't want a trained dog at this point.

No matter how trained, they still shed and track things in from outside. I do love animals, I just don't want mess where I've got to deal with it.

I guess my main point is that there is a big difference between liking animals, and wanting to be responsible for one. As Cassandra said, you need many, many months of work to properly train a dog. There is no way I'd be willing to put in that time and energy at this point in my life.

O.M.G.

I just happened to come to your blog by looking at other blogs and other blogs and other blogs

...wait, your Friday night isn't that exciting??

And I don't need to read any more to know that I am in love with your blog. I posted the same thing a couple weeks ago, even though my point was to tell my brother (who knows I hate dogs), that I find his dog okay.

hahaha... you are awesome! I had the same anxiety... I should have mentioned that and maybe people wouldn't hate me so much now! ;-)
